“The risk of bipolar mania and schizophrenia is very high, and we know that quetiapine is associated with this risk,” said Dr. R. K. Pereira, director of the Office of Criminal Investigations and senior author of the report.
He said the risk was considered “very low” and that there was no evidence to suggest Seroquel increases the risk of suicide.
The risk for bipolar mania was not high, however, as the FDA said that the number of patients diagnosed with bipolar was increasing.
Pereira said the risk was not low enough for patients with a history of suicide attempt in the past to make a diagnosis.
He noted that quetiapine and other anti-psychotic medications for anxiety were linked to an increase in risk of suicide.
“If a patient has a history of suicide attempt, quetiapine should not be used,” he said.
The OCPI review is expected to include further studies.
